In high school,  I went to my guidance counselor to find out what college and major would be a good fit.  I told her “I want to help people be healthy.” 

“Great” she said, “your grade point is excellent, have you thought about being a nurse or a doctor?”

“Yes, but I really want to help people be healthy before they are sick. I don’t want to work in a hospital or give patient’s medicine. I believe in the quote by Hipocrates ‘Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.'” Okay, okay… I was 17 years old, I wasn’t quoting Hipocrates, but I knew I wanted to take a natural approach to helping others be healthy.

After choosing Western Michigan University as the place to study Dietetics, I dove right in. I took class after class, waiting for the one that taught me how to prevent illness and heal people with nutrition. It was more than 4 years after graduating that I met someone who changed my world. I was working in foodservice management at a larger hospital when Dr. Doug Wacker sponsored my trip to the Food as Medicine Advanced Training program in Baltimore, MD. I was thrilled to find like minded clinicians who all realized the power of the body and the importance of nourishing it abundantly.
